A legal battle for a man to become a woman to gain custody of her children became successful.
Rene Salinas Ramos successfully gain approval to legally change her gender to a woman as part of her strategy to win a custody battle against the mother of her child.
According to Ramos, she had no choice but to bring the case to court because she was not being allowed by her former partner to see their child for almost half a year.
She proudly shared her new ID with the press, showing that her gender is now indicated as ‘Femenino’ or Female.
Ramos believed that women were being favored by the Ecuadorian legal system during custody battles so she wanted to prove that she could also gave ‘mother’s love’ to her children.
She insisted that she was a female so she had the right to change her gender legally.
“What I have sought is that I want to be a mother so that I can also give the love and protection of a mother,” Ramos said.
Ramos also claimed that her former partner was not giving good treatment to their children.
In 2015, Ecuador passed the Gender Identity Law that allowed their citizens to put their ‘self-identified gender’ on their legal documents instead of the one that assigned to them during birth.
The said law was considered a big victory for the LGBT community of Ecuador, however, what Ramos did caused them to raise concerns.
“This man’s private matter, to obtain custody of his daughters, isn’t the spirit of the law,” trans activist Diane Rodriguez told Vice News.
