A story of a former banana cue vendor captured the attention of the netizens because of his inspiring story after being declared a champion during the UAAP season 85.

John Lloyd Cabalo who won the 4×400 mixed relay in track and field during the said competition has been featured on several social media pages after they discovered that he was selling banana cue when he was still a child.

Cabalo who was living in Puerto Princesa during that time was invited to study in Metro Manila after his talent for running was discovered by his teacher.

In another interview, he previously used his talent for running during streetfights where he was tasked as a ‘started’ for his group.

Fortunately, the teacher who discovered him urged him to leave his group and use his talent for better things.

“May isang teacher na nagsabi sa akin na sumali ako sa takbo, may magandang future daw ako kesa maging basagulero ako,” he said.

The athlete didn’t waste the opportunity and accepted the offer from the National University.

Cabalo is now a successful athlete winning gold medals for the country.

Sarili ko na lang din iniisip ko,” he said.

He’s now preparing for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games qualifying tryout that will be held in Cambodia.
