NCAA Chairman considers to give John Amores a second chance to play again: “We can extend our help para matulungan ‘yung bata”

The chairman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) explained why they only decided to impose an indefinite ban against Jose Rizal University basketball player John Amores.

In an interview, Father Vic Calvo said that they refused to give a lifetime ban to Amores because they still want to give the basketball player a chance to redeem himself.

This was despite what Amores did not only to the players of the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) but also to a member of the University of the Philippines (UP) basketball team last July.

“Depende po sa interventions na gagawin ng JRU sa bata. Pero kaya indefinite ban, closest in a nice way of saying para kahit papaano we are just open. We are just giving him a little opening for him to maybe save his career,” Calvo said.

According to them, they’re still giving a chance for Amores to appeal.

“We’re not saying na this is it, but we still open the door for a new process, na he has the right to appeal. Hehas all the right and the privileges because he is in a democratic association – we respect that right,”  the chairman stated.

“Justice but merciful, so, pwede namin isulat na lifetime ban. But we [are] just opening up a small window for the child to return, possibly. Because he has more in the future that he can do and also we can extend our help para matulungan ‘yung bata.” he added.

They were also trying to contact JRU and asking them if they needed help to reform Amores.

“We are trying to send the message to JRU, and of course, they will do that as an institution naman. As an institution they will think of interventions like for anger management, mental psychological help, spiritual or whatever to help the child. So the person – rather, the player can be helped.” the priest said.

As of writing, Amores camp has yet to give any statement about the issue.
