“The story behind the COMMUNITY PANTRY in front of Nineveh Academy
It was a usual hot summer day of April 19, 2021 when a woman suddenly put a small table under the shade of our Narra tree in front of the school. After stabling the small table, she took her bag from her stroller and placed its contents on the top of the table. From the bag, she got vegetables, rice, kamote, eggs, canned goods and noodles. She eventually placed a sign on the tree branch saying “Sunny Brooke Community Pantry”; “You can get what you need for the day or donate your spare if you have any”.
“Upon seeing the good deed of this woman, the school personnel, and its neighboring establishments immediately supported and helped the woman. They donated a small tarpaulin to serve as an additional shade so that the items on the table will not be directly under the sun. Others took pictures and posted it on Facebook to further seek donations from their friends. The school likewise, posted the said pictures in their official Facebook page to inform its stakeholders of the good intention of the woman and to further promote and seek for donations.
“When the woman refilled the stocks on the table around 4:00 PM, the Administrator of the school happened to talk to her and asked the reason behind this initiative. She told the Administrator that while she was browsing her Facebook account, she happened to watch a video of a woman with her child crying and saying that they have no more to eat and are very hungry. After watching the video, the woman felt in her heart that she wanted to help but she does not know how she can do it since she is also one of those who became jobless because of this pandemic.
“One day, her co-workers called her informing her that they have contributed money for her and the money was right away sent to her. The woman said that the contribution given to her amounted to P1,500.00. She told the Administrator that she was very happy after she have received the money because she now have the finances to buy food items to give to the needy in the community.
“Her dilemma at that point is, how could she give the food items she bought. It was while she was thinking of the way to distribute the items when she heard on the news about this community pantry and how it works. From that moment she already knew what to do to distribute said items. The next question she had in mind was the place where she will conduct the pantry. While she was buying her food items, she happened to pass by Nineveh Academy and saw this big Narra tree in front. She thought that it was a perfect place to have the community pantry since the place is in the heart of the barangay where a lot of people pass by and there is also shade from the tree.
“This story has been written to recognize the good heart of this woman. She showed a good example of the love of neighbor that even she only have enough for herself to live, she still managed to help others.
“This story was also shared in order to correct the people’s perception that Nineveh Academy initiated this community pantry. The woman thought and initiated the activity and Nineveh Academy, together with the renters and owners of the different establishments around just shared and supported her good deed. The woman struck our hearts and reminded us also of our obligation to our fellowmen which eventually struck our friends’ hearts and so on.”
